I am always a little bewildered when people are incredulous or even horrified that I adjust babies and children. They assume that there is a willful neglect of logic and reason on the part of the chiropractor in applying their trade to someone who most obviously couldn’t and shouldn’t need to have their spine checked.
And I can’t help but turn that around and say that they are willfully neglecting the fact that children all have a spine and that they are subject to all the same stressors as adults. It seems illogical to me when a parent comes in for care but off- handedly say, “oh children don’t feel any pain.”
I’ve got news for you. Kids do. I see children with sore backs, headaches, shoulder problems, leg pains. I see children with ADHD, autism, colic, ear infections. Yet the majority of the children I treat are wellness patients with no pain.
I love treating children. They respond fantastic to treatments. They don’t have an accumulation lifelong postural and health habits to break through. What horrifies many adults is the assumption that we do not modify our treatment style for children and that we treat them with the same style and force as on an adult.

The adjusting techniques for children are extremely gentle and depend on various factors including age, size and nature of the condition.
How many times have I heard adults say, “can you tell me what caused my problem?” To which I respond, “I would require a magical crystal ball to see all the stressors and traumas you’ve amassed over the years.” An uncorrected problem from their childhood can perpetrate future health problems in their body.
The phrase “as the twig is bent, so grows the tree” means that an influence on a person as a child will continue to be seen in the person as an adult. Most people in younger generations did not know or have access to the knowledge that they must take care of their spine if they want to age gracefully.
Chiropractic treatments for children are not focussed on pain prevention. It’s about improving their constitution by removing stressors from their body. Many parents realize that having a strong spine and nervous system is integral to facilitating healthy growth and development within everyone – not just their children.
